The United States won their first-ever medal in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League as they surpassed Olympic champions Brazil in the bronze medal match in Lille, France.

The blow which they suffered to Russia in the semifinal left marks on Brazil as they lost to the United States in straight sets, partially 25-21, 28-26 and 28-26, in the bronze medal match in the 2018 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League Final Six, in Lille, France.

Brazil knew that recovery of morale was more at stake than clinching the bronze medal so the „Seleção“ players made a lot bigger effort against the United States than in the semis, yesterday. But, Matthew Anderson was simply unstoppable in the opening set as he tallied 7 points for the USA and helped his team set off a duel on the right foot – 25-21.

The United States took advantage of a scattered play of their rivals at the beginning of the second set (4-0). Brazil players composed themselves later on but still failed to tie the match at 1-1. The United States needed five set points before taking a 2-0 lead (28-26).

Aaron Russell led the way for the United States in the third set before Brazil’s head coach Renan Dal Zotto caught at a straw by sending William, Evandro, and Isac in. Brazil made a 4-0 run at 8-12 to level things up. The United States closed the clash by converting only their fourth match point (28-26).

Russell chipped in 13 points for the USA while Wallace scored 15 points for Brazil.
