In a repeat of the final of the previous edition of the tournament (2017), Cameroon outplayed most-titled continental team Kenya in the 2019 Women’s Volleyball African Nations Championship gold medal encounter in Cairo, Egypt.

In a thrilling encounter, the “Lionesses” prevailed by a 3-2 (25-17, 25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14) at the 6th of October Hall in Cairo. It was Cameroon’s 2nd second consecutive final and second-ever African Nations Championship title. As for Kenya, it was their 5th straight final. They have claimed most gold medals (9) and medals overall (12) in the history of the tournament that has been held since 1976. Earlier in the semifinals, Cameroon upset the hosts Egypt by beating them easier than expected: 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18), while Kenya overpowered Senegal by a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-20) in the other semifinal.

In the bronze medal match, Senegal defeated Egypt by a 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 14-25, 28-26) to finish third.

Laëtitia Moma, a top scorer the French Championship last season and a new player of Mulhouse, was named MVP of the 2019 African Nations Championship and also the Best Attacker. Moma was awarded the best player of the tournament, two years ago as well.

At the end of the final match, the players of Cameroon sent a letter to the country’s Minister of Sports, signed by the captain Christelle Nana, requesting the government to pay them off all arrears for competing for the national team, including payments of bonuses related to: participation in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix, 2017 African Nations Championship, 2019 African Nations Championship, winning the 2019 African Nations Championship and all other bonuses. They also want the government to pay the compensation to those players who lost money due to abandoning their clubs before the end of the season as some had to join the national team on May 12, 2019. This all coincides with the statement of Cameroon head coach Jean-René Akono after winning the gold medal, who said that his players did not have proper preparation for the tournament.
