We've been witnessing very exciting semifinal clashes at the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship.

Let's start with a game of the reigning champions Japan. They didn't enter the game in a good way so Korea took the opportunity to take the lead 1-0.

In another three sets, the crowd watched an amazing and super-tight match and fortunately for the Japanese fans, they won them all and took the spot in the final. These three last sets were ended with two points of difference which means that the Japanese girls were a little bit luckier and with more focus in decisive moments.

China - Thailand clash was even more exciting than a game between Korea Japan. Thailand have surprised China even though they were trailing by 1-0, losing the first set 25-23. The third set was extremely difficult, since both sides pushed to the limits, playing 66 rallies.

Luckily for Thai fans, the fourth set also went to Thailand to win the game and to schedule a match vs. Japan in the finals.

Asian Championship 2019, semifinals:

Korea - Japan 1-3 (25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 26-28)

China - Thailand 1-3 (25-23, 22-25, 32-34, 23-25)

WC 2019 W: Brazil beat weakened team of Serbia in thriller, China win Asian derby

Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn't pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.

In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games... :-(

The results of the VNLs don't give the participating national teams any points for the FIVB rankings. Does anybody or WorldofVolley has any idea, why? Reply
