Brazil Men’s National Team middle blocker Lucas Saatkamp “Lucão” got involved in a controversy during the 2019 FIVB World Cup medal ceremony.

After being elected the best player on his position in the tournament, Lucão made an obscene gesture during the medal ceremony, showing his middle finger after receiving a gold medal. This gesture will be a subject of an investigation by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) who stressed it was aware of the case.

“As the number one family sport in the world, it is our priority to serve as a model for new fans and with that in mind, we are disappointed by the gesture of the athlete in question. Until our investigation is complete, there will be no further comments,” FIVB wrote in a press release that is transferred by the Brazilian media.

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) has also spoken. In a statement, the governing body of the country’s volleyball said it will handle the case internally, but did not say whether Lucão would receive warning or punishment for the gesture for which it is unknown to whom it was addressed. This kind of behavior of Lucão came as a surprise knowing that he is one of the most experienced players in the “Seleção”. The 33-year-old player has been a member of the national team for 10 years and won, among many other titles, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Many Strength and Conditioning Coaches/Scoutman are trying to get into coaching. Due to their lack of experience and knowledge, at first, they take a major pay cut in comparison to actual volleyball coaches. Currently, coaching jobs are paying very little, even in the top leagues, and some of the experienced coaches are not taking jobs for 25.000-40.000 EUR, knowing that demands are just as high as before when they were making double of this salary. Unfortunately, club leaderships see coaches as a disposable matter and therefore keep dropping salaries because there are candidates that will take these jobs. I am not here to judge, just to describe some of the dynamics around this profession. Reply

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Interesting trend, that some coaches who specialised on physical training, some who never played volleyball on top level, became pretty successful volleyball coaches. It can be observed in some menś and women teams. It reflects a situation that volleyball has become a very physical sport. Even the world champion country, which in past had taught others, needs coaches from abroad who come into this category. Reply
