The economic crisis that emerged after the coronavirus pandemic kept on hitting volleyball clubs around the world.

It seems that clubs in Brazil are among those that are hit the most severely by the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Bruno Voloch, the Superliga Feminina runners-up, Sesc-RJ (coached by the legendary Bernardo Rezende), were forced to cut players’ salaries by up to 50%. Furthermore, the Rio de Janeiro club will have no foreigners in the squad for the next season.

This decision of the management of Sesc came after two other imposed to alleviate the financial blow: the budget cut and merger with C. R. Flamengo. Voloch stressed that no player will leave the club despite the salary cut, including the biggest stars Fabíola, Lorenne, Drussyla, and Juciely.

Prior to Sesc, men’s clubs Cruzeiro, Sesi, and Sesc also had to make radical moves, some in cutting wages and budget, and some in completely dismantling the squad and ceasing to exist.

RUS W: Karpol enters Guinness World Records!

Watching Nikolay Karpol and Yevgeni Trefilov (handball, head coach of the Russia women's national team) during the timeouts always made me feel sorry for these girls and was amusing at the same time. They both created the stereotypical image of a typical Russian coach – a big guy, always unsatisfied and yelling at everyone :) Still they both achieved a lot and it cannot be denied. Reply
