CL M: Chaumont spoil Vikings’ debut in the Champions League

Chaumont have opened the season in the Champions League with a 3-0 win.

 

Norway’s Vikings will have to continue practicing to reach the level of Chaumont…

The French side has scored a 3-0 win over the team from Norway 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-21). It was a good game from Chaumont, who spoiled the historic moment for the hosts as they made a debut in the CEV Champions League, playing in front of a fully packed Sotra Arena in Straume.

Wassim Ben Tara was the best scorer of the match with a total of 17 points for the winners. His teammate Matej Patak and Viking’s Vetle Hylland scored 14 points each.

Champions League qualifiers, first round, first leg:

Viking – Chaumont 0-3 (22-25, 12-25, 21-25)

Teruel – Lindemans 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17)

HAOK Mladost – Vojvodina 20:30 CET

Wednesday (10 October)

Soligorsk – Frankfurt 17:00 CET

Valepa – Istanbul BBSK 17:30 CET

Mladost Brcko – Neftohimic Burgas 19:00 CET

WC 2019 W: Brazil beat weakened team of Serbia in thriller, China win Asian derby

Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn't pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.

In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games... :-(

The results of the VNLs don't give the participating national teams any points for the FIVB rankings. Does anybody or WorldofVolley has any idea, why? Reply
