Italy Men and Russia Women were crowned Volleyball champions in the 2019 Baku Summer European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in which only players with the age up to 18 years have the right to compete.

Italy national team gave no chance to Belgium in the final of the Men’s Volleyball tournament in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) and defended the title from 2017. This was a repeat of their Pool B match in which Italy also prevailed in 4 sets.

The opposite hitter that reinforced Consar Ravenna youth team this summer, Tommaso Stefani, highlighted for Italy with 23 points in the final. Itas Trentino youth team outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto added 15 points. VT Temse youth team player Robbe van de Velde scored 19 points for Belgium.

In the bronze medal game, Russia outplayed Belarus by a 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 28-26).

In the Women’s gold medal match, Russia recorded a hard-fought win over Romania: 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17) and claimed the title for the first time. Russia beat Belgium by the same result in Pool A as well.

The “Zbornaya” was led on the court by the outside hitter of Dinamo Kazan youth team (Dinamo-Akademiya-UOR) Vita Akimova. She scored 20 points, including 7 aces! Her club teammate Valeriya Gorbunova tallied 14 points, while another 2 Dinamo Kazan prospects Yelizaveta Popova and Yelizaveta Gosheva made 4 kill blocks apiece. EUROVOLLEY 2019 M: Vital Heynen’s surprise – makes 6 substitutions at once (VIDEO)

Very irresponsible by coach Heynen! Team could of get trouble if someone would get injured in that set. You have only 6 substitutions allowed. Reply

POL M: Heynen criticizes EuroVolley format – “It’s not good for Volleyball”

Re: @~sadaf
Issue of his statement was that he asks for restricted, limited participation of NTs, due to of absence of tight matches...Moreover he had used the argument - results 3:0. So that I have used the statistics from other competitions, where should have been much more tight matches - like VNL, World Championship, due to of selection criteria . ( I did not treat the formula of VNL at all... )
The results of this small analysis are interesting, which I did not expected - see my previous comments. Remarkable indication is that the in final phases of these tournaments where had competed the strongest NTs, which should have been on the similar/same level, the percentage of matches which had ended 3:0 is higher as in a prelimenary phase, which is also pretty high. Especially when these NTs should have been the best in the world...

However a different question is - why was increased the numbers of NTs at European Championship?
Perhaps I will try to make some remarks on one aspect of that later on, from a volleyball fan point of view.. Reply

POL M: Heynen criticizes EuroVolley format – “It’s not good for Volleyball”

[@John Doek] Everyone criticised VNL, Heynen being one of them, when its formula was introduced. It is mainly the fault of VNL that there is so little time to rest and prepare for bigger tournaments in the second part of national season, there is too much matches to play. Reply
