Four more teams secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021 CEV Men’s Volleyball Champions League following the last day of the pool stage, joining the other 4 who got through earlier.

Italy’s Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia accomplished the mission of qualifying to the quarterfinals. It wasn’t easy though as France’s Tours VB took away one set from Perugia but the ’Block Devils’ came back and hit the victory that’s worth the first place in Pool B, whose second tournament they hosted: 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21). With this victory, to which they were led by Cuban-Polish Wilfredo León (18 points) and Argentine Sebastián Solé (6 blocks), Perugia overtook the top spot in the pool from the countrymen Cucine Lube Civitanova but the latter already secured promotion to the playoffs earlier (they are among the top 3 best runners-up across all pools).

It was quite a drama in Pool D in Modena, Italy. Already written off Knack Roeselare (Mathijs Desmet 23 points) from Belgium pulled off a little miracle, beating hosts Leo Shoes Modena by a 3-0 and putting rivals in the position to depend on the result of the other match in the pool to qualify to the quarterfinals.

Rescue for the team coached by Andrea Giani came from Russia’s Kuzbass Kemerovo (lost all chances to advance yesterday). Led by Italian Ivan Zaytsev (18 points), the club from Siberia beat Poland’s VERVA Warszawa ORLEN Paliwa by a 3-2. Such an outcome promoted Modena and eliminated Warszawa, who remained out of the top 3 best runners-up. Incredibly, what made the difference between Modena and Warszawa in the charts was a slightly better ratio between scored and conceded points in favor of Italians. More precisely, better by a 0.0062.

Two more clubs, whose players bit their nails in front of the TV as they weren’t on the court tonight, benefitted from the above-mentioned developments. Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys, who played their last match yesterday, and Poland’s PGE Skra Bełchatów, who finished competing in the pool stage at the end of January, took the remained two spots in the playoffs, as the 2nd and 3rd on the overall ranking of the best runners-up across all pools.

GRE M: Filippov fails to cope with lack of discipline of Cuban duo, resigns as PAOK head coach

Muchas gracias... Reply
