The curtain on the Preliminary Round of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League has fallen down as all Week 5 matches came to an end.

The last round of the 2019 VNL did not matter in terms of filling the places for the Final Six in Nanjing, China (July 3-7) as the last vacancy was taken yesterday, on Day 2 of Week 5. That’s when Poland joined hosts China (who regardless of having an automatic berth to the Finals, finished at the top of the charts), the USA, Brazil, Italy, and Turkey (in the order of placement in the standings) for the Nanjing tournament.

By looking at the official statistics, we can see that Poland’s opposite hitter Malwina Smarzek finished the Preliminary Round as the top scorer with 365 points. Knowing that her nearest follower in the ranking, Brayelin Martínez (259), got eliminated with the Dominican Republic and that the third-placed Gabriela Guimarães “Gabi“ from Brazil is at 247 points, Smarzek will likely keep her “crown“.

Ana Beatriz Corrêa “Bia“ from Brazil (41 kill blocks) and Poland’s Agnieszka Kąkolewska (33 kill blocks) will keep fighting for the best blocker (statistically) title as No.1 Maja Aleksić from Serbia (46) will not play Final Six.

Only one of the top three servers, according to the number of aces, in the ranking will continue to play the 2019 VNL – Indre Sorokaite. Italy national team opposite hitter served 24 aces, as many as Belgium’s Marlies Janssens and Dutch Juliet Lohuis.
