Russia became the fourth national team to punch the ticket for the Men’s Volleyball Tournament of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics via FIVB International Qualifier.

POOL E (Saint Petersburg, Russia)

Many expected a spectacle in the last round match of Pool E in Saint Petersburg between Russia and Iran, but the home side has spoiled the party. The “Zbornaya” swept the Asians in three sets, partially 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23, to claim the leadership in the pool and a berth in Tokyo.

The final score might fool those who did not watch the game as Russia had problems to reject Iran in the second and third set. The third set could have changed the course of the match but Iran were unable to preserve the lead of 20-17.

Interestingly, the Finnish expert on Russia’s bench decided to keep Mikhaylov as back-up through the entire match, giving a chance to Viktor Poletaev. It turned out that Mikhaylov played only one match in the tournament and it was against the lowest-ranked rivals Mexico, on Day 1.

The young opposite hitter highlighted with game-high 19 points (nearly 70% attack success rate). It was two more than Amir Ghafour scored for Iran. Russia dominantly secured a spot in the Olympics with all three wins and by not losing a single set.

ITA M: Trentino secure signature of 3-time consecutive SuperLega top scorer Abdel-Aziz!

One of the best opposite hitters in the world right now. Trentino will have a hell of the power when it comes to finish the ball but will definetely struggle to receive it. Both Lucarelli and Kooy are easy targets to aim and were usually hidden behind a libero. Still seems like there will be top 3 clubs in Italy next season: Lube, Perugia, Trentino. Modena will be weaker for sure and will struggle to be in the top 6 and Piacenza may make a surprise. Reply

ITA M: Trentino sign newly proclaimed Italy National Team member Kooy

Dick Kooy is a really solid player who has been very consistent in his pro career. Gaining him and Rossini are very very good Italian additions. That being said the loss of Grebennikov, Russell and Kovacevic will be significant.
Ultimately I will cheer for a healthy uninterrupted A1 season....fans or no fans....We need to play volleyball!!! Reply
