German men’s volleyball club United Volleys Frankfurt is angry at the country’s volleyball league!

United Volleys issued an angry statement on the club website regarding the allocation of spots for the next edition of the CEV Champions League.

The Frankfurt team finished the last season, which prematurely ended due to the coronavirus pandemic, at the second place in the standings. Given that the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), in order to enable long-term participants in the Champions League (who didn’t occupy the required place in the tables of their respective leagues to qualify, but could still have achieved it later in the season) to compete in the tournament in 2020/21, gave national federations the opportunity to register an additional participant. Germany was one of the countries that had one of these spots at the disposal.

But, the German Volleyball League (Bundesliga) didn’t take advantage of such an opportunity and registered only two teams for the next Champions League - the leaders in the standings Berlin Recycling Volleys and a team that was ranked one place below United Volleys in the charts – VfB Friedrichshafen. United Volleys stated that they consider such a decision of the Bundesliga absolutely "incomprehensible and harmful to German volleyball".

In addition to losing the additional spot in the Champions League, Germany lost points for the CEV Ranking, meaning the place in the CEV Cup as well. United Volleys refused to participate in the third-tier European cup – the CEV Challenge Cup next season, so Germany will have three instead of five possible spots in the European Cups in 2020/21.

The most important question is: why is Germany ranked so high? Apart from the top3 leagues there is a Turkish one in which we can find 4 good clubs like Fenerbahce, Halkbank, Galatasaray, Arkas and a French one with teams like Chaumont, Tours, Montpellier. Then, there is a German one in which there is Berlin Recycling Volleys with 11 points lead and without any lost match, total domination! One place for Germany should be enough and one through the qualifications while France should get 2 places. I completely don't get it, isn't Champions League supposed to be consisted of the strongest European clubs from the strongest leagues?

Re: @Gregoire
This is actually the first season in a while where Berlin was this dominant. Normally Freidrichshafen, Haching and/or Frankfurt are at the top 3 of the league as well. I cannot compare it to other leagues because I don't follow the men's leagues that closely, but I think that two places for Germany are justified. Al least it definitely has bee justified in the last few years.

ITALIAN CUP M: Verona and Piacenza disappoint once again

Piacenza will not have a good year with Hierrezuelo setting. He arrived unprepared and cannot set the front pin hitters and bic at all. Cleverly and Russell have no idea where those sets are going to be. The libero Scanferla is young and the staff is asking him to pass too much of the court.
Gardini is not leading this team in the right direction. Look for another setter quickly. Heck try Shaw there at this point.
Talent is wasting here.
