The Italian Men’s Volleyball League imposed penalties to four players involved in an incident at the end of Game 3 of the playoff quarterfinals, two days ago.

At the end of Game 3 of the 2018/19 SuperLega Credem Banca playoff quarterfinals between Sir Safety Conad Perugia and Vero Volley Monza, the incident occurred while players shook hands at the net.

Santiago Orduna, the Argentine setter from Monza, spit Serbian Aleksandar Atanasijević from Perugia. The opposite hitter than tried to physically attack Orduna but was held back by his teammates. For this, Orduna earned an eight-game suspension from SuperLega, which he will do next season, while Atanasijević was suspended for two matches, which means that he will miss Game 1 and Game 2 of the semifinals against Azimut Leo Shoes Modena.

Also, Perugia middle blocker Fabio Ricci got a one-game suspension while another Monza player, the Czech Donovan Džavoronok, earned a two-game ban. Both were punished for involvement in the same incident (video).

NO!!! This is awful news for Perugia!
I wonder what Atanasijevic did to make Orduna spit on him. Modena is in a really good place to take 2 matches.
Bata and Rici are monumental losses. wow

whatever might have happened, Orduna shouldn't have done that. Unless he did intend to provoke Atanasijevic in order to make Perugia weaker. Very unprofessional from both sides

Perugia paid a fine for Ricci, so he's going to be on court, and Atanasijević's suspension has been reduced to one match.

the situation is very similar to zidane in football in the final of the world cup 2006. for me orduna was the worst attitude, you shouldnt provoke the way he did. but Bata has been doing this for years and nothing happened to him. he is one of the players that celebrate in front of the other teams, even sometimes doing very rude manners and nothing happened to him, it was going to come a red card or some suspension. the serbian players has this problems: lisinac is extremely agressive and often gets yellow or red card, both podrastamin and bata keeps making rude gestures to the players on the other side...

Very irresponsible by coach Heynen! Team could of get trouble if someone would get injured in that set. You have only 6 substitutions allowed. Reply

POL M: Heynen criticizes EuroVolley format – “It’s not good for Volleyball”

Re: @~sadaf
Issue of his statement was that he asks for restricted, limited participation of NTs, due to of absence of tight matches...Moreover he had used the argument - results 3:0. So that I have used the statistics from other competitions, where should have been much more tight matches - like VNL, World Championship, due to of selection criteria . ( I did not treat the formula of VNL at all... )
The results of this small analysis are interesting, which I did not expected - see my previous comments. Remarkable indication is that the in final phases of these tournaments where had competed the strongest NTs, which should have been on the similar/same level, the percentage of matches which had ended 3:0 is higher as in a prelimenary phase, which is also pretty high. Especially when these NTs should have been the best in the world...

However a different question is - why was increased the numbers of NTs at European Championship?
Perhaps I will try to make some remarks on one aspect of that later on, from a volleyball fan point of view.. Reply

POL M: Heynen criticizes EuroVolley format – “It’s not good for Volleyball”

[@John Doek] Everyone criticised VNL, Heynen being one of them, when its formula was introduced. It is mainly the fault of VNL that there is so little time to rest and prepare for bigger tournaments in the second part of national season, there is too much matches to play. Reply
