He led the national team on 116 official internationals matches, (World League, European League, CEV European Championships and the FIVB Men’s World Championship).

“I have had a fantastic time with this team, and I think we have reached as high as we could. I would like to thank all the staff members and players for their effort and support in the last years. Four years ago the goal was to bring the team back to a top eight position in a major intercontinental tournament. Now that we have succeeded, it’s time for me to seek new challenges.” says Vermeulen.

“We are very grateful for all the effort Gido has put in the development of the Netherlands men’s volleyball, not only in the last four years, but also in the decades before. With the national team, he qualified for the World Championships for the first time since 2002. Thanks to the good results at the final round in Italy and Bulgaria, The Netherlands is allowed to play in the Olympic qualification tournament in 2019.” says Joop Alberda from the the Netherlands Volleyball Federation.
