Serbia Women’s Volleyball National Team showed this year how strong it was despite missing several players that were considered important.

A few months back, Serbia won the back-to-back EuroVolley title and did it without several players that were involved in conquering the world title one year prior to that. One of these players that weren’t on the roster for the 2019 CEV European Championship was Jovana Stevanović. Serbia head coach Zoran Terzić said that she simply didn’t show up on the preparations for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League this summer. The 27-year-old middle blocker of Savino Del Bene Scandicci (Italy) decided to explain her point of view regarding the absence from the national team duties this year.

“Before the season even started, I decided to miss it for personal reasons. The President of the federation Zoran Gajić was the first whom I informed about my decision, by the phone. After that, my club hosted Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, so on that occasion, I spoke with the coach, whom I also informed of my decision. Then, I assessed, there was nothing controversial. And after all this, I personally met with the President of the federation in Belgrade and once again felt that he fully supported my decision,” Stevanović, who has been a member of the Serbia National team since 2015, stated for Sportklub.

Stevanović added that she was truly shocked by the statement of Terzić who said that the player simply didn’t appear on the preparations. However, Scandicci player didn’t want to spoil the atmosphere in the team by talking to the media about it. That’s why she gave an interview regarding the situation six months later. Stevanović pointed out real reasons for taking a break from Serbia National Team.

“There’s a bit of everything, even some sort of discontent with the status that I had on the national team. It’s no secret that I had bad communication with the head coach, so I wanted to take a break from everything for one season. I told him that in a conversation, too. My mind and body needed rest. However, the essence of this story is that I have talked about it and informed the head coach and the president of the federation about everything.”

The middle blocker admitted that, at this moment, it’s hard to expect that she will return to the national team.

Terzic is known for getting into conflict with his players. The same happened few years ago with few other players. However he is amazing coach so Serbian volleyball federation is tolerating him. Last summer Serbia managed to became European champion without 2 starting middle blockers, Rasic and Stevanovic. It was never explained why they were absent…

They still need her. They will need her amazing blocking skills to beat China and Italy in Tokyo.

Terzic is very good coach, see his timeline and trophyes. But Jovanovic should rejoin back. Rašić was on injured list i suppose. Terzic also preyed for Ognjenović to stay in team year ago, when they won Italy. And now Maja won one more European with Terzic.

I believe Jovana. Terzic is a bad person and a bad coach. He is basically thriving on the devotion and the talent of his players, and he is lucky, because Tijana Bošković came up a few years ago, joining a team which was already spiked with world class players. He was also very reluctant to summon Jovana for quite a long time. She replaced Nataša Krsmanović in 2015, a player he dragged around the years before, although she could barely jump off the ground. I remember Krsmanovic being a heavy smoker, just like Terzic. Maybe that was the reason why he kept Krsmanovic in the national team for so long.

Jovana made such a huge difference. She was a key factor for Serbia becoming a world class team. Now, I am learning she is not just a great player, she is also a great character. I wish her nothing but the best.
