COPA LIBERTADORES M: Bolívar and Sesc open 2nd edition of tournament with triumphs

The Argentine champions Bolívar Voley and the Brazilian side Sesc RJ debuted with wins in the 2020 Men’s Volleyball Copa Libertadores in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Day 1 of this year’s Copa Libertadores de Voleibol (the 2nd edition of an international men’s volleyball tournament created in 2018 by the federations of Argentina and Brazil with the idea is to expand to more countries) was marked by wins of inaugural champs Bolívar Voley and Sesc RJ.

The titleholders Bolívar worked harder than expected to overcome Fiat Minas of Brazil, who play the tournament for the first time, by a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22). Cuban Jesús Herrera top-scored for the winning side with 17 points, while Alexis González made 83% reception (12 digs, 67% excellent). Argentinean Lucan Ocampo led Minas with 14 points.

In the other duel of the first day of the competition, the vice-champions Sesc beat Obras de San Juan from Argentina without complications (3-0).

Two more teams take part in this year’s Copa Libertadores and they will make their appearance on Day 2: Brazilian Sesi-SP and Argentinean Ciudad Voley. The tournament is played in a round-robin format, followed by the semifinals and finals, while the Argentinean and Brazilian clubs are separated into 2 different pools in terms of the ranking for the elimination stage.
