The most famous volleyball gymnasiums in Brazil, and one of the most famous in the world, will have to be partly renovated for the Olympic Games.

A few days ago, it was announced that „Carioca Arena 1“ will host the 2016 FIVB World League and FIVB World Grand Prix matches instead of „Maracanãzinho“, but without further explanation.

During recent inspection, it was revealed that the old waterproof cover on „Maracanãzinho“ was dry, rotten and was falling down. So, since March 1, works on strengthening the roof had started.

According to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games organizers, „Maracanãzinho“  will have to be closed, at least, for the next four months, maybe more, but the work will be over before the Olympics. The famous gymnasium should host volleyball tournament, on August 6-21.

Besides the roof itself, there is another reason for the work – the new electronic scoreboard which will be installed on the roof of the gymnasium instead of the current one. Since the size of the new device is larger than the previous one, much heavier equipment has to be placed to support it.
