INTERVIEW: Hippe for WoV – “Live in the moment and make the best out of it”

In these challenging moments of coronavirus pandemic, it’s not so easy to hear or read thoughts that would instantly light up the situation. But when you read what ex-Germany Women’s National Team player Saskia Hippe said in an interview for our website on how to mentally overcome the ongoing situation, you will be pretty much encouraged.

Until a year ago, Hippe was an indispensable member of the Germany National Team. Now, her former teammates are going in one direction, while the 29-year-old opposite hitter is more focused on the club career. In the last for years, Hippe has been playing for the Greek powerhouse Olympiacos S.F.P. Now, she shares the fate of the rest of the volleyball world and the rest of the world, in general…

As we could see on your Instagram profile, you’re still in Greece, you didn’t return to Germany. What’s your opinion, is it better to declare the end of the season in Greece or to wait to see when the situation with coronavirus will end?

“Yes, I’m still in Greece. After my fourth season here, it actually feels like home and besides my family, of course, I don’t miss here anything. I still hope that it will be announced that we’ll continue the season. It was going really well for us and to end this way, it just doesn’t seem fair.”

Are you in some sort of quarantine there and is life somehow restricted in Greece?

“Yes, we’re in quarantine. We are forced to reduce our going out to a minimum, for just the most necessary things. We have to write a message with the reason why we go out in case the police stop us on the street.”

Do you have training regularly in the club or you train individually by some special program?

“I work out by myself at home. I love following the LesMills programs. I always do them in summer and now I found out I can find them online as well. So, this is how I can annoy my neighbors now (laugh).

Before the current suspension of the season worldwide, Olympiacos dominated Greek league and qualified for the semifinals of the CEV Challenge Cup. Would you be disappointed if the season didn’t resume?

“Yes, I would be very disappointed. As I said, we were doing great and, in general, I feel like the world is held on ‘Pause’ right now. It seems logical to me to press ‘Play’ and not ‘Forward’.”

Do you think that you will have the place in the roster of the Germany National Team in some future tournaments and do you have any idea why you weren’t summoned in the past year or more?

“I think that our national team already has very strong players and they were playing last year together to build a good future. I think that they don’t miss me so much there.”

Do you have some advice in these very dark moments of coronavirus pandemic, some encouraging words for those who read our website but also for the people in your home country?

“I know it’s a very difficult situation right now and also thoughts about the future, in general, don’t seem so nice… But if this situation showed me something again, it’s to live in the moment and make the best out of it. We never thought something like this could happen, so how can we predict what will be after? It’s important to focus on now. If this pandemic helped us to find more to ourselves, nature to take a deep breath, and people to appreciate the small things more, we can go out from this with a huge win! Now, we have time to do things we never did, or forgot to do, or were too busy for. Let’s work on ourselves and try new methods. It’s a big challenge for everyone and a big option at the same time!”

‘Until a year ago, Hippe was an indispensable member of the Germany National Team.’ is not correct. She has not been playing for the national team since 2013.
