INTERVIEW: Nimir Abdelaziz for WoV - "We are not used to have a break from volleyball for a long time"

Nimir Abdelaziz had a good 2019/2020 season but we will never find out how far Milano could go since they were just right behind the BIG four of the Italian Serie A1.

The COVID 19 outbreak stopped volleyball events and all of the players now have to sit home and to wait for the end of it...

Since it’s pandemic time I guess you are practicing at home. How much you miss team training sessions?

Of course, I miss volleyball, especially the games and hanging out with my teammates! But I miss the most a normal life, where we can go out of the house without problems, hanging out with friends and family.”

How do you spend your time these days?

Days start to get really boring because after more than a month closed in your house it starts to be difficult to invent something new to do. Most of the days I try to wake up early and do the program that our physical trainer made for us and after that most of the day I am watching series, making video calls with my friends, playing Playstation and if the weather is good is spend a lot of time on my balcony.”

Did you play your last game in Serie A1 on February 16 and two games of the Challenge Cup at the beginning of March?

Yes, I did!”

How does it feel like not to play a single game for almost two months and probably there won’t be games until August-September?

It’s strange because we are not used to having a break from volleyball for a long time! I hope that we will have the opportunity to go back to practice soon because if it still takes long I might forget how to jump and play volleyball,” says Nimir laughing.

The game between Padova and Milano was canceled because some of Milano’s players had fewer. What was your reaction and reaction of the teammates? Do you think it was a coronavirus?

We were all calm because our medical staff always do a great job with us and from the beginning, they explained everything well. Nobody had like big symptoms and nobody got really sick.”

How would you rate the season 2019/2020? How far Milano could go?

In the Italian league think we were having a good season being close to the big 4 teams in the 5th place. But we will never know if we could be able to take another step and reach the semifinals of the league. In the Challenge Cup, we were doing really great and I was really confident that we had a big chance to win it but also that we will never know!”

Is this situation going to affect volleyball in some way?

There is already a big effect on volleyball seeing that a lot of clubs will be having financial problems. Now the players and the league are negotiating about the salaries for this season. Also, we don’t know when or how it will look like nor when the league is going to start. Will there be fans, yes or no? But it’s all difficult to predict how it will be because nobody knows when it’s going to finish. But let’s hope it will be soon!”

What are your plans for the next season?

Before it's official, I won’t say something about it but there will be news soon,” explains Nimir.

FIVB releases COVID-19 guidelines for restart of volleyball activities

At last the guidelines on Covid-19, from a top governing volleyball body.... I appreciate them. It is a progress. Some of recommendations are general, some specific for volleybal. It seems to be the soft legal instrument. Nevertheless they could assist to national VFs… Majority of recommendations are reasonable, some of them should not be a problem to kept, some will need a much bigger effort to be kept, some should be included yet. For this goal, there should be obtained a support (best voluntary) and discipline from athletes, coaches, officials, referees , medical staff, club owners, fans etc - realised what is in a stake… Media will have an important role in that..
For implementing of these measures there should be probably prepared also some Roadmap.. Perhaps it would be a suitable to consider the responsibility for pertinent officials, positions, and how to enforce crucial measures, recommendations, specified for this sport - if the situation would be worsen ....
We can hope , that these epidemiological preventive measures will be only temporary and volleyball will return soon to halls, and fans could see their teams personally.
