Two seasons in Zaksa, two championship trophies. This is a score of the Belgian national team member Sam Deroo in a jersey of Zaksa Kedzierzyn Kozle.

A month ago, the Belgian star has extended a contract with the Polish team for two more seasons.

It was not easy to make decision about the next two seasons. My heart was in Zaksa, I really wanted to stay after having two good seasons. I had some other offers. For me, the most important thing was to find a balance between economical and sport level. In the end we found that balance and I was very happy to extend contract with Zaksa,” says Deroo for WorldofVolley.

He had to weigh between very good offers that came to his agent’s office.

Of course you can make more money in Russia or Turkey but like I said, money is not everything. We can’t ignore money but the fact is that I had a huge desire to stay in Zaksa. In the end, we have reached agreement, fortunately for both sides,” says Deroo.

Is it going to be difficult now without Fefe de Giorgi?

It’s going to be different I think. New coach, new challenges. We are very eager to start working to retain the championship trophy. A big part of the team is staying. I wish everybody could stay but this is a new challenge for all of us. We will have to find a new balance in the squad. I just hope we can keep positive atmosphere like in the last two seasons.”

How would you rate the performance of Belgium during the first weekend of the FIVB World League?

It’s a good score for us. Against Canada, we didn’t show the level we wanted to present. On the second day of this first weekend we showed we can play amazing volleyball. We defeated Serbia that is playing almost with the best players. USA were not complete but these players from college are big talents so it was difficult to play against them. We simply had to adapt, to be aggressive, we had a good atmosphere, the intensity was also there. USA played much better compared to the first two games. In the fourth set there was a great volleyball I think the fans enjoyed. It was a great experience,” explains Deroo and adds:

Our goal in the future is to be among the top teams. We want to compete every time on this level, we just need to keep practicing and working, there is still long way to go but I think that we are on the right way,” says Deroo at the end of the interview.
