ECH W: Europe’s Volleyball family overwhelmed with pride

Among some 7,000 fans who yesterday accompanied the home heroines of Germany on their way to come back from two sets down to make it to the gold medal match with Russia there was one, very illustrious guest. Only a few days after his election this past Tuesday in Buenos Aires, Dr. Thomas Bach chose Berlin and the Women’s EuroVolley to make his first appearance as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Dr. Bach followed the semi-final match starring Germany and Belgium from the VIP stands of Max-Schmeling-Halle together with CEV President André Meyer who was evidently proud to host the newly elected IOC President on the next-to-last day of the European Championship. 

“We are overwhelmed with joy and delight for Dr. Bach decided to come to Berlin and pay a visit to the final stage of our Championship” Mr. Meyer says. “Yesterday it was history in the making here in Berlin: no other IOC President had previously attended our Championship. This is even more significant since Dr. Bach had just returned from the IOC Session in Argentina where he was elected as IOC President. We are evidently delighted with the fact that Dr. Bach has chosen Volleyball and the European Championship here in Berlin for his first public appearance after the elections held in Buenos Aires. Europe’s Volleyball family is additionally motivated to work hard for the good of the sport to improve on the latest achievements and try to reach new heights”.
