Castro was shot when he returned to his home in San Miguel de Tucumán. The incident occurred around 15:30 local time (19:00 CET). For this reason, Monteros decreed a double day of mourning, suspending activities and closing their facilities.

Police investigate the circumstances of the incident but some Argentinean media have found out how it happened.

A 24-year-old volleyball player and also law student was shot in the chest after being intercepted in the corner of two streets by two criminals on a motorcycle who wanted to rob him, local “Tucumán Noticias” published.

Castro was walking along with his girlfriend when criminals approached him. Witnesses said that Castro struggled with one of the assaulters before he fired a close-range shot that hit his chest. The criminals took the athlete’s backpack and a handbag before escaping at full speed on a black motorcycle.

Desperate young woman telephoned an ambulance that never arrived. Two people helped her to load the victim in a private vehicle and take him to the hospital where he arrived already lifeless.

As it turned out, Castro did not carry money in his backpack so a premeditated act is ruled out. His girlfriend did not have money either.

The death of Argentinean player was the second tragic death of a volleyball player this month. Venezuelan Kervin Piñerúa died of heart attack.
