In the first semifinals, in front the sold-out Dvorana Center Stožice in Ljubljana, the co-hosts Slovenia kicked out the world champions Poland from the semifinals of the 2019 EuroVolley: 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23). Slovenia will fight for the gold medal at the continental championship, for the second time ever, against the winners of France vs. Serbia match, on Sunday, September 29, in Paris (France).

Thus, Slovenia firstly eliminated the reigning European champions Russia in the quarter-finals and now the world champions in the semis. What a stunt! And we remind you that Poland dropped only one set in the previous 7 games!

Each of the sets was a battle to the last drop of sweat. Slovenia finished the first set into their favor with a spectacular block of Alen Pajenk on Wilfredo León.

At 24-23 in the second set, Slovenia failed to convert the set point. After the equalizer (24-24), Mateusz Bieniek entered the court and scored two points in a row of which the second one was from the block.

Slovenia got an early lead in the third set (10-7, 12-8). The home team increased the gap to 5 points (16-11) and Poland were unable to return.

Tine Uranut served to the net at 24-22 for his team in the fourth set. A glimmer of hope appeared for Poland at that moment, but Michał Kubiak responded in a kind and the match was over.

Urnaut was Slovenia’s most prolific player with 18 points, while Jan Kozamernik made 70% attack (7/10). As for Poland, León scored 22 points, including 4 aces. Paweł Zatorski made 88% reception (16 digs, 25% excellent).

2019 CEV European Men’s Volleyball Championship – semifinals:

Poland – Slovenia 1-3 (23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 23-25)

France – Serbia, September 27 at 21:00 C.E.T.
