A night before the 2020 U20 men’s European Championship was to set off in the Czech Republic (cities Brno and Kuřim), two national teams informed CEV of their withdrawal after having players infected with the COVID-19: Turkey and Ukraine. Both sides were put into Pool II.
Italy and Poland staged confident starts of the tournament, sweeping Belgium and Serbia in Pool I. In the same pool, the hosts came back from two sets down against France but lost a tie-break. Antoine Pothron led the “Les Bleus” in scoring with 20 points. Simon Magnin made 4 blocks. Jan Vodička scored 17 points for the Czechs.
The reigning champions Russia prevailed in the neighboring derby over Belarus (3-1), which was the only match scheduled for the opening day in Pool II.
