In a series of thrilling matches for the Men’s CEV EuroVolley 2023, Slovenia has become the first team from Pool B to secure its spot in the eighth-finals. Slovenian team clinched their third consecutive win by defeating Spain in straight sets. In another heart-pounding match, host nation Bulgaria delighted local fans by overcoming an early setback to triumph over Ukraine.
Playing at the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Slovenia shut out Spain in a 3-0 victory, posting scores of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-15. Klemen Cebulj and captain Tine Urnaut spearheaded the Slovenian offense with 17 and 14 points respectively, leading the team to cement its top-four position in the final pool standings.
Bulgaria, playing in the second match of the day, recovered from an initial first-set loss to celebrate a four-set victory over Ukraine. With scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-23, Bulgaria improved their record to 2-1, currently placing them second in Pool B with six points. Martin Atanasov led the team’s scoring with 18 points, followed by Aleksandar Nikolov and Tsvetan Sokolov who added 13 and 11 points respectively. Ukraine’s top scorer, Oleh Plotnytskyi, matched Atanasov with 18 points but couldn’t prevent his team from remaining winless, relegating them to the bottom of the table.
