Igor Gorgonzola Novara earned a significant 3-1 win over Savino Del Bene Scandicci in the first leg of their CEV Champions League playoff, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of next week’s return fixture in Florence.

The hosts delivered a focused and high-intensity performance, prevailing 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23.
Tatiana Tolok was the standout performer, finishing with 32 points and claiming MVP honors.
Novara edged a competitive opening set, finding separation late through sharp defensive transitions and effective counterattacks. They maintained control in the second, with Mayu Ishikawa contributing key serves and Federica Squarcini adding presence at the net.
Scandicci responded in the third set, as Ekaterina Antropova led the offensive push and Lindsey Ruddins provided impact to narrow the deficit. The visitors capitalized on crucial moments to take the set 25-22 and extend the contest.
The fourth set proved the most balanced of the night, with both teams trading momentum. Novara regained the edge with a critical block at 20-18 and held firm after Scandicci drew level at 22-22. A final surge, capped by Tolok’s finishing touch, secured the victory.
Under competition rules, Novara will reach the quarterfinals with either a win of any scoreline in the return match or a 3-2 defeat. A 3-0 or 3-1 Scandicci victory would force a golden set playoff.
Head coach Lorenzo Bernardi praised his team’s execution while emphasizing the importance of the second leg.
“It was a strong performance against a top opponent,” Bernardi said. “But the job is not finished. We must approach the next match with the same determination.”
The decisive second leg will be played February 25 at Pala Wanny, where Scandicci will look to overturn the deficit and extend their European campaign.
