CL M: Zenit achieve hard-fought win in Germany, red card in tie-break helps Perugia down Belogorie

Zenit Kazan had to fight hard to overpower German VfB Friedrichshafen in Round 3 of the 2017 CEV Champions League 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21) to keep their unbeaten run.

Reigning Champions League title holders, Zenit Kazan from Russia, easily prevailed in two of four sets of Pool C match versus Friedrichshafen, on road. They lost one and could easily lost another one (Set 4 when German side had 8-4) to be pushed against the wall and forced to resolve the match in the tie-break. Luckily for their fans it didn’t happen. For this, Zenit can thank mostly to Maksim Mikhailov (21 points) and Cuban Wilfredo León (20 points). The Czech Michal Finger had 16 for Friedrichshafen.

In the same pool, Turkish Arkas Spor İzmir downed French Paris Volley 3-1.

In Pool E, in which Knack Roeselare shocked Halkbank Ankara, Sir Safety Perugia from Italy and Russian Belogorie Belgorod played one of the most intense matches in the Champions League this season. In a crowded „PalaEvangelisti“ gymnasium, filled with fiery fans of Perugia, the hosts prevailed in a tie-break to reach 3-0. Decisive moment of the fifth set, and also in the game, occured at 13-12 for Perugia when Belogorie coach Aleksandr Kosarev got a red card. Serie A1 runners-up took 14-12 lead. Serbian Aleksandar Atanasijević was the most efficient player in Perugia with 25 points while Dimitriy Muserskiy had 16 for Belogorie where nine players scored at least one point!

Belgian Noliko Maaseik scored their first win by causing upset to Turkish İstanbul BBSK 3-2 in Pool A.
