At the end of what seemed like an interminable Pool B’s challenge on the last day of the preliminary stage at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament, Turkey beat Russia 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-25, 15-10). Such a result brought Giovanni Guidetti’s team to third place in the charts of the pool, meaning it will avoid the first-placed side in Pool A, Brazil (the side that undoubtedly showed the most impressive form so far across all pools), in the quarterfinals. At the same time, Turkey sent today’s rival straight to the clash against Brazil and allowed the United States to claim no.1 in Pool B.

Meryem Boz tallied 22 points for the European vice-champion, while Zehra Güneş set up as many as 7 blocks. Irina Voronkova scored 20 points for ‘Zbornaya’. Arina Fedorovtseva served 6 aces.

The Olympic champion China closed its participation in the event in Tokyo with another 3-0 victory, this time against Argentina, leaving its fans to wonder what would have happened if it played all matches this way…
