Day one of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship saw some upsets as Türkiye and Portugal shocked higher-ranked rivals.
In Pool G, Türkiye (No. 16) stunned Japan (No. 5) with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-23, 25-19). Outside hitter Efe Mandiraci led all scorers with 17 points, while Adis Lagumdzija added 15. Japan’s Kento Miyaura topped his team with 13 points.
In Pool D, Portugal celebrated their first World Championship win in 23 years, defeating Cuba 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19). Rising star Nuno Marques scored a match-high 19 points, with Filip Cveticanin and Jose Pinto adding 14 each. Cuba’s Marlon Yant also hit 19 points.
