VNL M: Italy Defeated United States

Italy closed out the opening week of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League with 3-2 win over the United States, improving their record to three victories from four matches in Ottawa.

The reigning world champions were pushed all the way by an American side that repeatedly fought back after dropping sets. Italy took the first and third sets, while the United States answered in the second and fourth to force a deciding tie-break.

In the fifth set, Italy made the stronger start, building an early advantage and maintaining control to secure victory after more than two hours of play.

Outside hitter Luca Porro led the Italian attack with 24 points, while Mattia Bottolo added 14 points after coming off the bench. Kamil Rychlicki also reached double figures with 10 points.

The United States were led by opposite Jake Hanes, who produced a match-high 25 points, including five aces. Captain Matt Anderson contributed 16 points as the Americans finished the first VNL week with a 3-1 record.

Result: Italy 3-2 United States (25-18, 15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-10)
