Cameroon made a winning start by defeating Morocco 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19) while Libya outplayed Ghana 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10).

Algeria defeated Chad 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-19) and Rwanda also enjoyed a straight-sets victory, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) against Botswana.
