In the first match of the playoff semifinals of the 2019/20 Volley League Pame Stoixima (top 4 teams of the regular season at the time of the suspension of the competition due to coronavirus play the best-of-3 series at one venue), the 4th seed Foinikas managed to beat the top seed Olympiacos by a 3-2, despite trailing by 2-1. Furthermore, the reigning champions had 24-22 in the 4th set and 14-13 in the 5th set but failed to win.

It was the first win of Foinikas over Olympiacos after 5 years, third in total in mutual encounters. The Piraeus team is the only one having an entire squad, that competed before the break caused by the COVID-19, at the disposal while Foinikas missed some key players such as Argentine José Luis González and Serbian Filip Stoilović.

The game was played at the gigantic OAKA in Athens, which hosted a domestic volleyball match for the first time ever. There were no spectators and a duel was organized under strict measures of the health protocol. Slovenian Žiga Štern scored 19 points for Foinikas, while Theodoros Voulkidis stood out in the losing side with 21 points, including 7 of the team’s 18 kill blocks.
