Actually it happens that someone is starting the season with this double role but at some time he is leaving the team and therefore a decision has to be made at full speed in order to fill in that gap. However, being a member of your country’s Volleyball national team and, at the same time, coach of the Beach Volleyball national squad is something rather unique.
Konstantinos Tambouratzis has achieved this feat after his name was included on the list of 25 players called up by Greece’s coach Sotirios Drikos for this year’s FIVB Volleyball World League. Tampouratzis has indeed been at the helm of Greece’s Beach Volleyball national teams since 2013.
“I have been playing Volleyball professionally for the last eight years and at the same time I have been coaching Beach Volleyball teams. Since two years I have been the coach of our national teams,” Kostas Tambouratzis says. “I enjoy being a Volleyball player and a Beach Volleyball coach at the same time but I have to admit that Mr Drikos’ decision to include me on the roster for the World League is a real honour.”
“Once he called me I understood that he has great plans for our national team and I felt really motivated to be a part of the group as it enters a totally new era,” Tambouratzis continues. “I will be giving my best for this challenge we are about to take up in the World League. This could not happen without the unconditional support of my staff and of my players, Vassiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani.”
“I really enjoy both roles and I also have the experience to deal with this unusual situation,” Kostas stresses. “If I am finally retained for the matches in this year’s World League, I will take a break from my coaching duties and function.”
After winning silver in last year’s European League, Greece is back in the World League after as many as 10 years of absence. “This team has a lot of potential and many talented players who are working very hard, thereby portraying our society,” Tambouratzis concludes. “We have plenty of hard working people in our country, all seeking for new endeavours.”
