Andrea Giani has once again shown his amazing coaching skills, leading his club Milano to the away victory against favorites Trentino in the first round of the Italian Men’s Volleyball Championship, 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13). The Dutch opposite Nimir Abdel-Aziz was brilliant for the winning side with 26 points (4 aces), while Milano had 11 aces in total. In Trentino, Filippo Lanza scored 18 points.
Cucine Lube Civitanova started their title defense campaign with a four-set victory over Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia, partially 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23. Still, Lube fans will certainly not jump for joy as their key player from the last season, the Bulgarian Tsvetan Sokolov, sustained injury already in the first set and did not come back into play. Osmany Juantorena topped Lube with 20 points. The U.S. opposite Benjamin Patch notched 16 for Vibo.
The Serbian bomber Aleksandar Atanasijević pushed Sir Safety Conad Perugia to the straight-set triumph over visiting side Kioene Padova with 16 points, while Giulio Sabbi led Azimut Modena to a 3-0 win over BCC Castellana Grotte with 15 points.
Calzedonia Verona nearly dropped a two-set lead on the road against Taiwan Excellence Latina. Thomas Jaeschke, the U.S. National Team member, poured 26 points for Verona. The Serbian opposite Saša Starović made 21 for Latina.
