The Okayama Seagulls and the JT Marvelous prevailed in their single-game semifinal face-offs in the 2019/20 V.League Division 1 Women, whose Final Stage is held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in the country’s capital of Tokyo.
The Okayama Seagulls, who finished 2nd placed in Pool B of the Top 8, made a surprise by eliminating No.1 from Pool A, the Denso Airybees: 3-2 (26-24, 25-14, 19-25, 13-25, 15-7). Syūka Kaneda top-scored for the winning team, which has no foreign players in the squad, with 28 points. The international from Trinidad and Tobago, Sinead Jack, made 21 points for the Airybees.
In the other semifinal game, the JT Marvelous (No.1 in Pool B of Top 8) swept the Saitama Ageo Medics, 2nd placed in Pool A, by a 3-0 mostly thanks to American Andrea Drews (23 points). Croatian Katarina Barun-Šušnjar scored 17 points for the losing side.
