The event in the capital of Jamaica will be the fourth of six women’s qualifiers scheduled by NORCECA in 2013 with the previous ones held in Curacao, Trinidad & Tobago and U.S. Virgin Islands.
The participating teams will be Nicaragua, Suriname, Bermuda and hosts Jamaica who will compete in a preliminary round-robin before the top two teams decide the first place and the third and fourth place meet for the third position.
The top two positioned teams of the tournament will be granted spots in the third round of competitions scheduled in early 2014. The best NORCECA ranked team as of January 1, 2014 among the six third placed teams also will get a ticket to the following stage.
Nicaragua and Jamaica finished in first place as host teams in the first-round events organized in 2012 while both Suriname and Bermuda ended in third place.
Nicaragua and Jamaica are currently ranked 10th and 12th, respectively, in NORCECA classifications while Suriname and Bermuda are far behind at 27th and 32nd.
On May last year, the Central American team won Pool H, with a five-set victory (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11) over Guatemala with Valeska Hernandez elected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Last November, Jamaica defeated Barbados 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19) and their star player Lecia Brown won the MVP trophy together with the awards as best scorer and best blocker.
