The Slovenian men’s volleyball team is set to begin a new era as head coach Gheorghe Cretu bids farewell after a successful three-year tenure. The Romanian coach, who guided the team to historic achievements, including a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Championship, a bronze medal at the 2023 European Championship, and a fifth-place debut at the Paris Olympics, will not have his contract renewed.
General Secretary of the Slovenian Volleyball Federation (OZS), Gregor Humerca, confirmed the decision, citing the need for “new blood” and a fresh approach. “We believe the time is right to rejuvenate the team, not just by introducing younger players but also by refreshing the head coach position. Discussions with potential candidates are underway, but nothing has been finalized yet,” Humerca stated.

Cretu, who is also coaching the Polish club Skra Bełchatów, has been linked to several national teams, including Serbia, which is still in search of a new head coach.
