On Thursday, December 11, one of Belgium’s most decorated Volleyball players, Frauke Dirickx, received the Flemish Award of Sports Merit from the hands of the Flemish Minister of Sports, Philippe Muyters. This is a truly special recognition for Dirickx since this award can be presented to athletes only once in their life.

The jury decided to award the 34-year old setter who currently plays for Italian champions Nordmeccanica PIACENZA not only because she achieved a historic eleventh place at this year’s FIVB Volleyball World Championship with Belgium’s ‘Yellow Tigers’ or because she is one of the best setters in Europe.

Dirickx was actually awarded because for more than ten years she has been a role-model athlete in her home country.

Together with sisters Chaine and Kim Staelens, Dirickx was among the first players to join the Tosports School in Vilvoorde, thereby laying the foundations for Belgium’s rise to the international elite, which included a historic bronze medal at last year’s European Championship and winning the b of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Dirickx is now listed alongside some other outstanding sports personalities, such as basketball icon Ann Wauters and the former IOC President, Dr Jacques Rogge.
