Austria’s Thomas Kunert & Christoph Dressler and Czech Republic’s Marketa Slukova & Barbora Hermannova made history by becoming the first ever gold medalists from a Middle European Winter Beach Volleyball Championship.

Winners

The inaugural event organized by MEVZA, the Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association, took place at the Beachwell center in the Czech town of Pelhrimov.

Two indoor sand courts provided the arena where 21 men’s and 19 women’s duos, representing all six MEVZA member countries – Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia, as well as Israel, battled it out for the crowns.

The home fans were pleased to see three Czech teams make the women’s podium.  The top honors went to the top-seeded Marketa Slukova & Barbora Hermannova who shut out Eliska Galova & Sarka Nakladalova by 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) in the final. Lenka Hajeckova & Hana Skalnikova completed the Czech medal trio by beating Austria’s Katharina Schuetzenhoefer & Lena Plesiutschnig 2-0 (21-15, 21-11) in the third place match.

On the men’s side, Thomas Kunert & Christoph Dressler started their quest from the very first qualification round and had to win six games in a row to emerge victorious with the gold.  In the particularly dramatic final they defeated Israel’s Sean Faiga & Ariel Hilman in three sets – 2-1 (21-17, 13-21, 16-14). In the all-Czech bronze medal match, Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner overcame their more experienced compatriots Robert Kufa & Jan Dumek in the tie-break – 2-1 (22-24, 21-17, 15-13).

On behalf of MEVZA I would like to thank the Czech Volleyball Federation and the organizers from Beachwell. I hope that the Middle European Winter Beach Volleyball Championship will become a tradition, which continues year after year,” said MEVZA Beach Volleyball Coordinator Frane Zanic.
