IRN M: Tensions in quarterfinals, Paykan go against fierce rivals Urmia in semis (VIDEO)

Second placed team after regular stage, Paykan Tehran, defeated Matin Varamin at home court in front of 1,000 spectators 3-1(25-21, 25-21, 17-21, 25-22) and scheduled semifinal clash with third-seeded Shahrdari Urmia VC who swept their opponents in quarter-finals. Since the stake was huge, tensions were present on and off court, but security officials managed to control the situation.

Recall that some serious incidents occurred in previous match between fierce rivals Paykan and Urmia, in regular stage.

“For us, this match was more important than final game. I thank God that my players showed a good performance in important moments of the match,” Peyman Akbari, head coach of Paykan, said after the match.

Argentine Juan Cichello, assistant to the head coach of Iran’s National Team, Raúl Lozano, was watching the game.

In other remained quarter-finals, Samen Al Hojaj Khorasan overpowered Shahrdari Tabriz in the city of Mashhad 3-1(27-29, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21). This win sent Khorasan to top-seeded Sarmayeh Bank in semifinals.

This clash also had tensions. More than 3,000 spectators exploded when, at one point, local player Amir Hosseini and Mikaeil Tajer from Tabriz exchanged strong words under the net and both received yellow cards for unsportsmanlike conduct.
