Time limit in volleyball?
So far, the rules in volleyball were quite clear – Whoever wins 3 sets will win the game, without any time limitation. Theoretically, a volleyball game can last forever, if the ball never touches the floor. Of course, that has never and will never happen, but anyway volleyball matches can often last for more than two hours…
And that is something that TV stations are not happy about.
According to Bruno Voloch, FIVB understand that partnership with television networks is very important for volleyball itself, so they are willing to slightly change the rules of the game and make it more attractive for TV.
This source writes that FIVB General Secretary Luiz Fernando Lima came to the conclusion that the ideal time for a single volleyball match would be 1 hour and 45 minutes! Therefore, there is an option to make a time limit for each set at 25 minutes. If neither of teams wins the set (reaches the 25th point) in that period of time, the clock stops and whoever was in the lead in that moment will win the set!
The rule about the time limit for the tie-break is still being discussed.
The plan is to make the whole volleyball game fit into 1 hour and 45 minutes, including the commercial breaks between the sets.
We will see if these ideas actually become the new official rules of volleyball.
