Al Ahly’s joy of winning the trophy was a bit spoiled by the injury of Mohamed Abdel-Moneim. The receiver twisted his knee in the third set and was carried off the floor to the hospital where he got the news of being awarded Best Receiver of the tournament.
By taking the 12th trophy intended for the best team in Africa, Al Ahly became absolute record holders in the continent since the second best team in number of trophies is Tunisian CS Sfaxien with six. Despite receiving a crown for the best team in Africa, Al Ahly did not secure a spot in the 2017 FIVB World Club Championship in Poland. They will have to wait for wild cards distribution in order to possibily take part in the tournament.
In the 3rd place match, Algerian Bourj Bouaririj claimed an easy 3-0 win over Libyan Swehly to win the bronze medal.
