The team from Salo, second seed, defeated title holders and also No.1 HPK in the fifth match of the playoff finals 3-2 (25-10, 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) and took the series by a 4-1.
Viesti missed a chance to solve the question about the new champions in Game 4, which they played in front of their own crowd, but HPK prevailed 3-0.
Ukrainian setter Viktoriia Tuchasvili recovered from a figure injury just in time to help Viesti in Game 5. It turned to be one of the most decisive, if not the most decisive moment of a series. When Ronja Heikkiniemi fired an ace and U.S. receiver from Hämeenlinna team Allison Mayfield committed an error, Viesti players could start a celebration of their eighth national title overall (also an eighth in the last nine seasons). Russian international Nadezhda Gokhshtein topped Viesti scorers in Game 5 with 20 points while Piia Korhonen collected one point less for HPK.
Interestingly, Viesti coach Tomi Lemminkäinen was involved in winning of all eight championship trophies of his team, either as assistant or head coach. As for Viesti players, this was a sixth title for libero Hillaelina Mäntylä, fifth for receiver Noora Kosonen third for setter Viktoriia Tuchashvili…
