By beating the hosts Egypt in the Cairo finals, Tunisia claimed the 9th gold medal in the African Championship, the first in 14 years, and broke the record of eight continental titles that was held by their rivals today. A new record is certainly even sweeter for the Tunisians as they set it on the Egyptian soil.
Tunisia also took revenge on Egypt for losing the finals at their ground in Sousse in 2013. Including this year’s finals, these two sides battled for the gold medal in the last three tournaments.
Tunisia dominated in the finals in Cairo, allowing Egypt to stay alive only in the first set before running them over in the next two, partially 25-22, 25-20, 25-15.
In the match for third place, Cameroon beat Algeria 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 27-25) to join Tunisia and Egypt as the African representatives in the 2018 FIVB World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria.
