The first set decided many things. The score was tied at 22:22 when Karol Klos went on a service line. Polish middle blocker made an ace! PGE Skra Belchatow took the lead – 23:22. Then, a crucial point. Klos served once again, Lube had difficulties in reception, but Michele Baranowicz somehow managed to set the ball with one hand, while Giulio Sabbi’s spike ended in the rival’s side of the court…
But, referee said that home team made a mistake! It is not sure whether Baranowicz had contact with the ball on the other side of the net, or Sabbi made a mistake while jumping behind the 3rd meter line. Anyway, point and two set balls went to Skra Belchatow – 24:22. Players of Lube protested, Dragan Stanković received a yellow card for applauding to the referee, but the call stayed the same. And, Facunto Conte used the first set ball with a strong spike from a counter-atttack – 25:22.
The opening lead gave a big psychological boost to PGE Skra Belchatow, while home side got very nervous. Already at the beginning at the second set assistant coach of Lube received a red card because of the protest! The whole gameplay of Italians just started to fall apart, while Polish squad knew how to use that. Skra took the second set – 25:19.
Squad of Miguel Falasca did not stop there. They opened the third set with a 9:2 run… It was a game over for Lube which will have such a difficult task in the rematch.
