The start of the big Turkish derby was super exciting. VakifBank had an early +4 lead, 10:6, however Fenerbahce quickly tied the score at 11:11, with two aces of Kim Yeon-Koung in the process. Yellow Angles continued with good game and, after the ace of Lucia Bosseti, they went on the second TTO with 16:14 advantage!
VakifBank players obviously needed a short break, and they returned on court in great shape. Home side tied the score at 17:17, and then even escaped to 19:17 thanks to ace of Robin De Kruijf and mistake of Madelaynne Montano. But, the drama has just begun! Kim made her third ace in this set and equalized the result at 20:20. Two teams went point by point until 22:22 when Korean star used a counterattack to put Fenerbahce in front – 23:22! Giovanni Guidetti took a time-out… It was a great decision.
Because, VakifBank firstly tied the game (23:23), then regained the lead with a strong spike of De Kruijf (24:23), while Sheilla used the very first set point with an ace – 25:23, 1-0 for VakifBank!
If you think that the first set was thrilling, than you should watch a replay of the second. Two volleyball powerhouses had such a close battle throughout the whole set, VakifBank was up by one at the first TTO – 8:7, it was the same at the second TTO – 16:15, while couple of moments later it was 18:17 for the home team. The next point was a very long rally, and it has ended with a referee’s call which made Kim go furious. The main referee called that Montano’s dig was late and that the ball touched the floor. Point went to VakifBank – 19:17, Kim protested loudly, but the call remained.
And the run of the home side continued, 20:17, 21:17! Marcello Abbondanza had to call for a time-out. This time short pause came in perfect moment for Fenerbahce! Because, Yellow Angels seized next 5 points and took over the lead – 22:21! But, another turnaround was on the way. Milena Rašić stopped the run of Fenerbahce – 22:22, while Sheilla scored immediately afterward and returned the lead to VakifBank – 23:22! Teams took one point each – 24:23.
Home team missed the first set point – 24:24, so as the second one – 25:25 (at 25:25 Fenerbahce players once again protested very loudly, because of one referee’s call, but in vain 26:25). VakifBank missed the third set point as well – 26:26… But they did not miss the fourth one. Kim Yeon-Koung was blocked and it was 28:26, 2-0 for Vakifbank!
But, Fenerbahce was not down yet. Away side had a great opening of the third set, escaped quickly at 7:2, then to 11:6 and finally to 18:13. It was far o from over though. VakifBank made the last attempt of a comeback and managed to decrease the margin to 20:19! But, Kim scored for 21:19, Carolina Costagrande made mistake for 22:19, Kim scored for 23:19 and then she made a great block for 24:19… Montano ended the set with great spike – 25:19, Fenerbahce approached to 2-1.
Those were the only moments of joy for Yellow Angles. Because, VakifBank has put an end to this match on a pretty powerful way. Home side opened the fourth set with 5:1, and the margin only kept increasing. It was 6:1, 8:2, 11:4, 13:5… At the second TTO the score was 16:9. Fenerbahce could not do anything, Costagrande finished the match with great play on the net.
VakifBank scored a maximum win in the first leg of the Playoffs 6.

Vakifbank is simply better team. They have so many quality players;Sheila, Rasic, De Kruijf, Vasileva, Naz, Gozde, Gizem etc. Fenerbahce tried to answer with only two players; Kim and Montano. Gameplan of vakifbank was to serve onto Kim, so it left only Montano for the attacks. Montano did great job but it was not enough. Fenerbahce middle blockers were so inferior to Vakifbank. Therefore, Vakifbank deserved the win with its quality players and effective gameplan.

I feel so sorry for Kim. It is heartbreaking to see her struggling in both offense and defense. Fenerbahce simply does not deserve her. I hope to see her sign a contract with another team next season.

if Bosetti played a litte better the result would be different. Fenerbahce lost two sets with two points. After 4 sets Kim and Montano got tired. Abbondanza also responsible from this result. Because he did not use Hildebrand option instead of Bosetti. Comparing the Vakif’s middle players Eda and Bauer’s performans was not good enough. Abbondanza did not give any chance to Dicle. Fenerbahce’s major problem is not quality of player but quality of management.
