TUR M: Cuban Michael Sanchez shines in Champions League

In the one of the most important championships for clubs in the world, he is a Cuban who has attracted attention. Michael Sánchez, who came to Turkey this season to defend colors of Arkas Sports Club, is the second top scorer in Champions League and the most efficient spiker by statistical reports.

In the last-round match against VfB Friedrichshafen, he led his team from Izmir towards qualification for Playoffs 12 stage. In this match against the German team, Sánchez had a 51% efficiency in the attack and he scored a total of 29 points.

“We made a good start and I was very pleased to be able to help my team beat the Germans. We had a very tough game, which was worth our ticket for the 12 Playoffs. With the support of our fans, we got a great result,” says shirt with No. 6 of Arkas Sports Club.

In his first season in Arkas Sports Club, Sánchez has been one of the leading players  in the Champions League. In seven games played so far, the Cuban player has already scored 157 points, with an average of 5.61 points per set, the second best among the attackers of the 2016/17 edition. Also, he is the second best scorer of the tournament at this moment.

“We are working very hard in order to achieve a good result in CEV Volleyball Champions League. I always say that the most important thing is to be able to help my team. But also, it’s good to stand out in the competition, which brings together some of the best athletes in the world,” says Sánchez.

Considered one of the best opposite player in the world, Sánchez has been playing for Cuba for years. As far as his club career is concerned, he wore the shirts of Ciudad La Habana (Cuba), Lokomotiv Novosibirsk (Russia), Fakel Urengoy (Russia), Al Rayyan (Qatar), Korean Air Jumbos (South Korea) and Personal Bolivar (Argentina).

“It’s always a challenge for any athlete to play outside his country, to go to places with different culture and language. In each one I grew more as a player and also as a person. I am very happy in Turkey, it is a country that has invested a lot in volleyball in recent times, and the clubs have a great structure”, concludes Sánchez.

For Arkas Sport Club next challenge in the Champions League will be on March 1 in Russia against Zenit Kazan. This will be the last game of the group stage. In addition to the continental competition, Sánchez plays for Arkas Sport Club in the Turkish cup and in the national championship.
