After 49 years, the Men’s national team of Italy stepped onto the podium in the Summer Universiade. And just like in 1970, when they also hosted the event (Turin), the “Azzurri” won a gold medal. This time, they did it in Naples.
In a real battle against Poland in the final, Italy recovered twice to finish the tournament in a perfect manner – they recorded 7 victories in as many matches: 3-2 (16-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10). As for Poland, they will have to wait to eventually claim the gold medal for two more years as the next Summer Universiade is going to be held in the Chinese city of Chengdu.
Azimut Leo Shoes Modena opposite hitter Giulio Pinali highlighted for Italy in the final with 26 points, while Sir Safety Conad Perugia middle blocker Fabio Ricci made 6 kill blocks. Bartosz Filipiak, the new player of Trefl Gdańsk, was Poland’s most efficient player with 22 points. The new ZAKSA Kędzierzyn Koźle member Kamil Semeniuk served 5 aces.
In the bronze medal match, Russia swept France by a 3-0.
Fakel Novy Urengoy outside hitter Denis Bogdan top-scored for “Zbornaya” with 15 points. Dinamo Moscow newcomer Maksim Belogortsev set up 4 kill blocks. Chaumont opposite hitter Julien Winkelmuller scored 11 points for France.
