Turkish teams stood on the way of Chinese rivals in the last round of the pool stage. Firstly, Eczacıbaşı VitrA Istanbul beat the official hosts Guangdong Evergrande in a direct clash for No.2 in Pool A, whilst the reigning champions VakıfBank Istanbul wrote down a straight-set victory over Tianjin Bohai Bank and became the other team from Pool A to advance to the semis. So now, there will be two Turkish-Italian encounters in the semifinals.
Tianjin were greatly weakened for a decisive duel. Their main superstar Zhu Ting injured her wrist in the match against Dentil Praia Clube in the third set, yesterday, so she was unable to play against her ex-team. Zhu commented on the seriousness of her injury after today’s match: “In fact, my wrist is old, and this time it’s more serious than before.“
The Swede Isabelle Haak chipped in with 24 points for VakıfBank. Li Yingying made 9 for Tianjin.
