Chemik vs. Conegliano
In the clash of the two title holders from Top 4 European leagues, Italian Conegliano achieved second win in Pool A by beating Chemik from Poland. Interestingly, in each of all five sets, one of the teams had domination over the other – 25-18, 14-25, 12-25, 25-14, 15-11. Two rising stars of world volleyball highlighted a duel – Mexican Samantha Bricio led Conegliano with 18 points (3 aces) while domestic power Malwina Smarzek had 19 points (4 aces) in Chemik.
Dinamo Krasnodar were on verge to upset namesakes from Moscow in the Russian classic of Pool B, despite the fact their players did not receive salaries for the last seven months. There was even a huge possibility they will boycott this match. But they did not. And not only that. They provided amazing resistance to home rivals 2-3. This match will be remembered by strong blocking performance on both sides – Dinamo Moscow had 17 (Croatian Maja Poljak made 6) while Dinamo Krasnodar had 15 (Maria Perepelkina made 7) – as well as by many aces (11 each – Dinamo Krasnodar’s Viktoriya Chaplina made 5). Dominican Bethania De la Cruz had 23 points for Dinamo Moscow while Nataliya Malykh scored 20 for Dinamo Krasnodar.
In same pool, Swiss giants Volero Zürich got easy win over Romanian Alba Blaj 3-0 with 25 points from Ukrainian Olesiia Rykhliuk, while VakıfBank İstanbul from Turkey swept Dresdner SC from Germany away in straight sets in Pool D with 19 points from American Kimberly Hill.
