Markin was one of the most important players of “Zbornaya” at the European Qualification Tournament in Berlin, Germany (January 5-10) on which Russia secured spot in Rio.

But, in the coming months Markin was suspended because of a positive test for meldonium. Althought, he was found not guilty, Markin was not on the list of Russia NT for Rio Olympics. Alekno explained that it was not his decision.

“Markin missed the Olympics for unsporting reasons. About the fact that he will not be able to play in Rio, we have learned only three days prior to departure for the Olympics,” Alekno stated.

Russian Volleyball Federation previously emphasized that Markin simply was not included in the squad.
